Sri Lanka Declares Weekly Holiday as Fuel Crisis Deepens Across Asia
As the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran continues, causing the Strait of Hormuz to be closed, Sri Lanka has announced that every Wednesday is now a public holiday, with the school week reduced to four days in order to save fuel. With oil prices reaching as high as $100 a barrel, the island nation has now reinstituted the National Fuel Pass, limiting the amount of gasoline available per citizen, causing frustration as the amount available per citizen is very low.
The energy crisis, which is currently sweeping across Asia as the region receives 90 percent of the Strait of Hormuz’s oil, is causing desperate measures in the region, including Thailand’s request that citizens stop wearing suits in order to save on air conditioning, Myanmar’s alternate-day driving, Bangladesh’s planned blackouts, and the Philippines’ ban on non-essential travel while providing financial support for transport workers and farmers.
